For much of my life I have constantly been aware of the concept of ‘boundaries’. The notion where one is granted or denied the chance to exist within or outside a determined space, for instance, derived from the social status one belongs to.
Through the use of ‘the wall’ as a visual subject matter for this project, the aim is to question whether this mechanism is a catalyst for class division, social polarization or displacement, security and peace, or prosperity and sovereignty.
Division instilled by walls carry multiple interpretation. The walls surrounding a gated community, for example, represent security and the protection of prosperity. In divergence, a prison is perceived as an environment or enforced reclusion and social ‘rehabilitation’.
In both these examples, ‘the wall’ has a determined function and ideological representation. Hence it is erected as a preventative device to resolve apparent issues.
